Tragic Crash Near University of Delaware Claims Student’s Life; Eight Others Injured
A devastating incident occurred on April 29, 2025, when a U-Haul truck, driven by 22-year-old Gordon Turner, fled from police and struck multiple pedestrians and vehicles on East Main Street in Newark, Delaware. The crash resulted in the death of a 24-year-old University of Delaware graduate student and left eight others injured.
Incident Details
At approximately 4:30 p.m., Newark police officers approached a U-Haul truck that had been reported as an unauthorized vehicle. As officers attempted to arrest the occupants, Turner drove over a curb, collided with a police car, and sped away. Officers did not pursue the vehicle, remaining within the shopping center. Turner continued westbound on East Main Street, lost control of the truck, and struck two pedestrians. The vehicle then collided with several parked cars, causing a chain reaction that injured additional individuals. The truck eventually came to a stop near a post office.
Victims and Injuries
The deceased victim was a 24-year-old graduate student at the University of Delaware. Another 24-year-old graduate student was seriously injured and is in stable condition at a local hospital. Three individuals sustained non-life-threatening injuries, and three others were treated at the scene for minor injuries. The driver, Gordon Turner, was also injured and received medical attention.
Charges and Investigation
Gordon Turner has been charged with two counts of second-degree murder, including death caused during the commission of a felony and reckless conduct showing indifference to human life. Additional charges include first-degree assault, disregarding a police officer’s signal, and possession of marijuana in excess of personal use quantity. Turner is also a fugitive wanted in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. A firearm was found inside the U-Haul truck following the crash.

The University of Delaware expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, offering condolences to the victims’ families and providing support resources for students. A memorial has been established at the crash site, with students placing flowers and messages calling for increased safety measures on East Main Street. This incident marks the second fatal crash involving a University of Delaware student in less than a year.
